In this essay, I will be comparing three texts that I have studied, "King Lear", "Silas Marner" and "Pride". I will be discussing a number of elements from each text; themes, cultural contexts and general vision-viewpoints (G.V.V's).
A common theme across the three texts is that of dysfunctional families. In "King Lear", Act 1 Scene 1, Lear shows his arrogant and egotistical tendencies by asking his three daughters to quantify their love for him. "Tell me my daughters ... Which of you shall we say doth love us most?". This is a cruel test, especially considering whoever says they love him the most gets the largest portion of land. Goneril and Regan lie to their father and tell him they love him more than words can describe. "... I love you more than words can wield the matter..." "... she names my very deed of love". Cordelia, however, does not comply with Lear's desires. "Nothing, my lord". Lear is livid and, in a fit of rage, confiscates her portion of the land he planned on bestowing her. This altercation demonstrates the dysfunctional relationship between Lear and Cordelia at the beginning of the play.
